Splitting your time between open vs closed canons

For fandoms of open canons -
Pros: Activity whenever there's a new installment; more inspiration/ideas from the latest developments; potentially having more eyes on your fanworks and more fanworks by others to enjoy.
Cons: Anxiety over your speculations and fics being 'jossed'; anxiety over sharing controversial opinions/fanworks; pressure to formulate opinions on the latest developments on a weekly basis to stay active.

For fandoms of closed canons -
Pros: Being able to see the big picture of what canon is all about; less pressure to churn out reactions/fanworks to stay active; convenience of binge-watching.
Cons: Less activity; fewer engaged fans as people start drifting away to new canons.

How do you divide your time?

I'm not sure if there's a proper name for the awkward time in the year when winter changes to spring. There'd be sunlight and green grass for 3 days, then back to everything under a sheet of snow for a week. The fandom equivalent would be following a new canon, thinking the writers would take a plot in a direction that's catnip to you, then finding out in the latest installment that you're off-base. 

In that awkward period, it'd be great to set aside some time to revisit old fandoms/canons.

So around Imbolc? The time when lambs are being born and the first greens can be found under the snow and it's time to try to turn the last of the winter stores into a feast because spring is finally coming? Seems apropos.
