Reylo discussion

Hey lovely folks! This is a genuine "asking for a friend" research question. Said friend posted about this tweet. Our responses were both "damn, good for them" but also neither of us understand the appeal of Reylo. Obviously there is and people are into it, and absolutely no judgment or squee-harshing at all—this is absolute curiosity.

I'm not in SW fandom at all, though I've seen most of the movies, and am only aware that there is some fandom drama around the issue. So if you ship it or a ship with similar dynamics and feel comfortable talking about it—what's the appeal? What about it does it for you?

You're more than welcome! Honestly, the amount of detail is more like "7/8ths of an iceberg is below the waterline" on how much I could talk about this ship, so thank you for being interested.

"I still think they both missed a bet by not doing the deal where Rey joins Ben|Kylo in ruling the galaxy... on the condition that they open peace talks with the Resistance and work toward making their galactic government something that the Resistance won't want to resist."

"I would have liked that so much more than what we got."

:D :D :D :D :D :D I am so happy about this response, because... obviously, I wanted that, and it's also... well, it could be done in a way that appeals to a broad enough swath of Star Wars fandom, i.e. space battles and other forms of action scenes, because Hux exists (and would probably object violently to that sort of thing especially if it's Kylo Ren in charge) and also after reading Delilah S. Dawson's Phasma novel I can totally see Phasma and Rose Tico bonding over efforts to bring a reckoning to the GFFA's extraction industry... but I was like, "Yeah, I'm probably the only person who wants the Star Wars movie where everyone's sitting around a conference table talking galactic realpolitik and also all kinds of the Skywalker family's dysfunction come out in what's supposed to be political negotiations". (I might have a lot of drawerfic about this, I'm just saying.)

The one thing the sequels did was give me more appreciation for the prequels. I still think they're awful, but they attempt to at least address the galaxy's politics in a coherent way.

*happy jazz hands* Yes! All of this! Honestly, I... like the story of the prequels better than I like the story of the original trilogy--- the OT was, for my taste, a kind of meh story done really, really well for what it was, while the PT was a really interesting story executed very, very poorly.

Like I want to see pew pew pew against Space Fascists, but I also want to see what happens re: diplomacy and realpolitik because that would be fascinating when you have space wizards.

Yes. Yes. YES. This. All of this. Galactic realpolitik in the GFFA for all the wins ever.

Ask me about my "Charlie Wilson's Star Wars" headcanon, because I had both seen the movie and read the book of Charlie Wilson's War long before the Star Wars sequel trilogy came out, but I watched the movie again after seeing TFA and I could not stop coming up with a Charlie Wilson expy for the GFFA after that. Guy who gets into all kinds of scandals--- Twi'lek dancers and glitterstim!--- but also embezzles money out of the Imperial treasury to funnel it to the Rebellion by way of his seat on a couple of Imperial Senate committees? And then later his honorary nephew Ben Solo slips him some of Han's engine-room jet-juice in return for Uncle Chaarle explaining what Ben's Mama and her other Senate cronies are arguing about this time? "These things happened and they were glorious and they changed the galaxy. And now we are kriffin' up the endgame"--- paraphrase of a quote from the real Charlie Wilson about Afghanistan.
