I had an Idea, and this is my largest Community, so you get it first.

WorldCon 2032: On Mars.

Yes, that would be the 90th WorldCon, seven years prior to the first. Nice is currently bidding to host 2026, no idea who else will be committing to a Committee, I think Memphis is trying to secure the next one after Chicago. (is D.C. happening in person or will it be remote? Like, in West Virginia and Baltimore?)

DC is unclear. They sent out a survey in January asking "would you like to delay from August to December if it meant a higher chance of being in-person" (and of course people said "I would like to delay from August to December because the weather in DC is probably more tolerable in December :D :D "). But then the follow-up was "we hoped to have an answer by now, but there's an issue with the hotels, so stay tuned."

That being said, I heartily support this proposal. Equal non-travel for all!

Well, yes, August from what I hear isn't prime D.C.

And that they are needing to be tight to the vest until Hotels Finish Best Offer, natch.

I figure some people will travel, but not to Mars itself.

2032 is also five years past the potential awarding of the Retro Hugo that's 'only' 75 years After the Fact.

(I have reasons for WorldCons 2040 and 2042 being held somewhere on Earth. Unless there's an easy Moon Base, Sealab or Orbital Colony.)

there are always joke bids to do stuff like the moon, or mars, or gallifrey... I think a srs bid to do an all remote con on Mars time would be a decent idea, by 2032 you might even have somone on Mars willing to send a recorded message (for better chances, ISS in 2032!)...I mean NZ pulled off all online with a few months notice and it was decent (and I say this from GMT, I had serious jetlag without leaving home), I bet a planned-to-be-remote con could rock.

Since "by now" I was supposed to have a jetpack commute, I felt required to broach the obvious.

I figure if there is sufficient buy in, maybe ISS can blink their lights or otherwise 'attend' without interfering with their schedules. Even if that's people crafting along with a pre-recorded art activity.

Just remember, Ray Bradbury got taken to Coney Island as part of WorldCon 1. The car ride over probably more perilous than the flight from the West Coast.
