"Vidding" software

I'm interested in making a very simple video edit, probably just still photos with a musical song in the background. Maybe a few seconds of video footage mixed in here and there. These would be my own pictures, so I don't need to (for instance) clip a professional recording or edit it down.

I have a new Windows 10 laptop (much improved over my old one but that is another story). Can anyone recommend cheap, accessible software that might be useful for this?

You may want to try cross-posting this to the vidding comm to reach more vidders directly - I'm afraid my own knowledge consists of going to a vidding panel at con.txt last year (which was brilliant! and I wish I knew the DW usernames of the two presenters.)

DaVinci Resolve is fully free, and will do all the things you need it to do. It will do a lot of other things too though, and I didn't find it super easy to learn.

(If someone knows of something modern but at about the level of the old Windows Movie Maker I would love to try it.)

kdenlive is free but in my experience has a bit of a learning curve so it probably isn't the best for beginners. shotcut is pretty good and definitely easier than kdenlive but i've only used it a few times so i'm not really sure lol

Kdenlive and Shotcut are both open source, and I believe both now work on Windows. I haven't used Shotcut but I gather it's easier than Kdenlive... but Kdenlive has the advantage that if you need help, you can feel free to bug me.

VLC Media Player is a free tool you can use, downloadable here. Here's a how-to guide; if that doesn't suit, there are a bunch of others.

I've never used Kdenlive, but I've used Shotcut, and it's free and works well. I use it for really basic stuff, but when I try to do more complicated stuff the tutorials and documentation aren't often very helpful.

Thirding Shotcut; I used it for fanvids for years. It can be buggy, but for something simple like what OP wants, I think it would be perfectly fine!
