[community profile] fan_writers comm - for meta about writing

Come on over to [community profile] fan_writers geek out about writing! Some posts shared in the comm:
- "Where I Need to Be": A discussion on your preferred writing environment.

I know more people are joining Dreamwidth and poking around after various events at other sites. I thought I'd mention the resources I put together on how to create a Dreamwidth comm for people who'd like to try their hand at it! I'm still adding to this as I continue to learn new things while running [community profile] bnha_fans, a comm for fans of Boku no Hero Academia.

Since first asking for advice on this group, I've been collecting all these posts in a journal tag, as well as links to external resources where relevant. The comments are often full of people more experienced than me chiming in as well, especially in the earlier posts. Hopefully someone else finds something helpful in there! :)

There is a community that is dedicated to being a directory of people on DW who post fic on their journal and/or community. So it's a good place to browse to find people, and to put yourself out there as someone who is here to be found. [community profile] dwfanfic

A few months ago, I was asking here for advice on how to write community guidelines ahead of creating a fan community for Boku no Hero Academia. [community profile] bnha_fans has been chugging along for about six months now, and I've been documenting what I learned around creating a Dreamwidth comm in a series of posts, now (hopefully!) nicely organised:

'Creating a Dreamwidth community' Masterpost

It's just "one person's journey" rather than the most definitive guide ever, but I thought I'd share this here in case it might be helpful to other people. Especially newcomers to Dreamwidth thinking of starting a comm who might feel as out of their depth as I did at the start! :)

Hi everyone!

This week, Dreamwars the Star Wars fandom chat community celebrates the first year of its existence. :) Perhaps someone here might be interested in it?

Dreamwars is a low-effort place to just come and talk about Star Wars with other fans here on DW. Every week there’s a “chat corner” post with an optional discussion prompt, and people can chat the comments. That’s it! Don’t feel like talking about the prompt? You can talk about anything else, it’s an optional prompt for a reason ;) Not in a mood for SW? Just skip a week (or a month), no big deal.

The chat prompts vary quite a lot! We go through the movies, the newest shows, old Legends/EU books, general “theme topics”… as an example, these were the prompts for the last 4 chat corners:

SW can be a bit divisive and people have opinions and feelings, but the goal is to make space for everyone, and I think it’s been working pretty well this past year. :)

I definitely have to thank the participants for this - you folks are great! We’re not a big community, or a busy one, but I’d say we really are a community now.

If any of this sounds interesting, come check out this week’s chat corner :)

I started a list of communities focusing on Chinese fandoms (dramas, novels, actors) and/or learning Chinese. If that is something you are interested in, head over to [community profile] c_ent and read it here.

I'm looking for a community dedicated to meta* that I can post the occasional linkspam to, where I wouldn't be posting against the current rules. I did some poking around, which I documented in a post on my blog. [community profile] fandom_meta looked promising, until I read the posting rules, and realised it is for posting links to one's personal meta posts. [community profile] meta_warehouse might be suitable, but again, the focus is meta, not links.

Does anyone know of anything suitable? It doesn't have to be active -- I'm happy to just start posting into the void, and see what happens. At the very least, I'll have a record of the interesting things I found to go back and look at :)

* for those who haven't previously encountered the term, 'meta' here is used to refer to non-fiction fannish writing. There might be more specific definitions, but I like the broad brush inclusive option.

Working from old lists, I compiled a list of Multi-Fandom Writing Prompt Comms & Whatnot here on Dreamwidth.

It's right here: Multi-Fandom Writing Prompt Comms & Whatnot and if there are any I missed, please let me know!

(Not looking for exchanges, just fests/bingos/prompt communities.)

A LOT of participants wished for more fannish engagement and feelings of community in the wishlist challenge. [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith wrote a constructive post in response collecting a lot of links to active communities and practical tips for engaging here on Dreamwidth. I also referred some of the participants to this community.

I'm planning to create a BNHA community since the existing ones appear to be inactive. I've been looking at the way other fandom-focused communities do code of conduct/community guidelines on Dreamwidth and have generally been impressed with how short they tend to be!! Like, the guidelines for this comm are two lines. And it seems to work? I'm very afraid of running myself into a corner by not being clear enough, haha.

Here's what I'm thinking of going with:

  • Treat people with respect.

  • Don't harsh other people's squee. Be mindful that the character you hate is someone else's favourite. Try to come here to celebrate what you love about the fanworks and canon, the characters and themes and anything BNHA-related that sparks joy. Character bashing, kink shaming, flame wars and dogpiling aren't welcome. This is a ship and let ship environment.

  • NSFW content (dark themes, mature topics, adult content, etc) should be placed under a cut and tagged appropriately, so people who want to avoid those topics can do so. Mentioning dark themes from canon (e.g. child abuse, mutilation, suicide-baiting, ...) in passing is fine but should go under a cut if digging into the details.

One of my main concerns is the negativity from Twitter and Tumblr and Discord spilling over to the comm but I'm not sure if I'm going overboard pre-emptively. I'm also not sure yet how to handle manga spoilers for the anime-only, when the anime is years behind 🤔

Do people usually create tag lists for their comms? Or is it possible to rename and manage tags as they get created? Wondering if the tag list should go into the guidelines otherwise...

Tips, advice, and links to more examples are all very welcome! This will be my first community.
