[community profile] moodthemeinayear is coming back in 2026 with a new twist: Creating a custom mood theme can now earn you Dreamwidth points!

Mood Theme in a Year is a community that takes a laid-back approach to creating a custom mood theme. If you've always wanted to create your own mood theme (those little images that pop up when you select something from the drop-down "Mood" menu when posting), this is a great place to do it! Take your time creating graphics for anywhere between 15 and 132 moods, either following the community's suggested schedule or going at your own pace. (Though you need to make a minimum of 18 graphics to earn any paid time.)

The "official" schedule starts again from the beginning on January 1st, but you can jump in at any time during the year; feel free to challenge yourself as well with Bingo cards or the Mood Theme in a Month calendars! Learn more in the community pinned post or profile.

I hope to see you there!

Event Description: Summer of the 69 is an event focused on creative works about the sexual position, open to all fandoms and to original works, and to all types of creations. Participation is through two means: A comment meme where users can leave and fill prompts, and themes posted weekly to get creative juices flowing.

The 2025 fest has officially opened! If the above description interests you at all, check out the following links:

[community profile] moodthemeinayear, a community dedicated to creating custom mood themes, is starting its next round of the Minimum and Medium Mood Tracks tonight. If you're interested in following along and organizing enough images to min-max a custom mood theme on the Minimum Track, or branching out a little farther on the Medium Track, now is a great time to start! And feel free to join in on the Maximum Track simultaneously, if you want to really diversify your mood theme.

Mood Theme in a Year is gearing up for its second full run!

Once a week starting in January, the community mod will make a post with three mood themes. Those are the suggested moods to work on for that week. In those posts, you can talk with other community members, brainstorm, encourage each other, make suggestions, and generally cheer one another on. You are welcome to post any mood images you make to the community as you go, and you are welcome to join or leave the community at any point in the schedule.

Despite the name, there are three main schedules for this community:

  • The Maximum Mood Theme Track, which begins on January 1st and continues through the year with regular breaks
  • The Minimum Mood Theme track, which starts seven times a year and goes for six weeks at a time
  • The Medium Mood Theme track, which starts three times a year and goes for fifteen weeks at a time, with one break in the middle

  • Mood prompt posting will begin on January 1st and continue through the year. The Maximum track will include all 132 moods; the Minimum Track will include the bare minimum 15 moods for a complete mood theme, plus an optional three moods that will give you the greatest image variety in your mood theme for the fewest actual images; the Medium Track includes all 34 higher-level moods that other moods inherit images from.

While Dreamwidth requires a paid account to use a custom mood theme, you do not need a paid account or even to want to use a custom mood theme to participate in this community! If you're intrigued by the idea of creating a custom mood theme, or just watching along and potentially cheering on others as they do so, you are welcome to join in the fun to the extent you feel comfortable. (There's also the secret hidden option of creating a mood theme with completely original/copyright-free images and submitting it to Dreamwidth to be a possible site-supported mood theme 👀)

Hi all! [community profile] smallweb is going to be hosting Small Web September, which is a low-commitment challenge to work on a smallweb project of choice during the month of September.

This could be editing personal archive/shrine, setting up a fediverse instance, checking out geminispace, or anything else that fits into the wide definition of "small web".

Shamelessly going for a two-for-one promo, because why not.

All-ages community [community profile] moodthemeinayear is finishing its second break period and about to enter the next leg of the suggested schedule! If you've ever wanted to create your own custom mood theme but found the process too daunting, Mood Theme in a Year helps make it more approachable with three suggested moods to complete images for per week, as well as regular breaks. Anyone is allowed to join at any time, and to start with any mood they like, not just what the suggested schedule lists for a given week.

Adults-only community [community profile] summerofthe69 is running again this year! Open to all fandoms and to original work, Summer of the 69 is a festival dedicated to works featuring the sexual position. Suggestions for this year's weekly themes are now open, and will remain so until the end of April, and a poll to finalize the themes will run shortly after. The fest itself runs from June 9th to September 6th, to hit 6/9 in both common date formats. Come check it out!

[community profile] moodthemeinayear, a community dedicated to creating a custom mood theme at a relaxed pace, has reached its first scheduled milestone!

At the end of Part 1 of the suggested schedule, anyone following along should have created the minimum number of required images for a complete custom mood theme. There's more coming up starting next Monday for anyone who wants to continue, but this also works as a fine jumping off point for anyone who's satisfied with what they have.

This is also a great jumping on point for anyone who might be interested! Since the community schedule is just a suggestion for people who want a bit more structure, you're welcome to tackle Part 1 and Part 2 simultaneously, start with Part 1 and do Part 2 after the next break, skip Part 1 until next year, work on all the moods in alphabetical order, use a random number generator, or any other order you can think of.

Whether you're interested in creating a custom mood theme yourself, or just want to check out the art and cheer people on, I hope you visit [community profile] moodthemeinayear!

[community profile] moodthemeinayear is a low-pressure community dedicated to creating a custom mood theme over the course of a year. For anyone who has ever wanted to create a custom mood theme, but found the sheer number of moods to be too intimidating to tackle all at once, this is a community for you!

Starting on January 1st, Mood Theme in a Year will prompt three moods a week, with regular week-long breaks throughout. You can create as many or as few as you like, with several useful stopping points built into the schedule, and you can jump in at any time, and stop whenever you're satisfied. You also don't have to stick to the schedule, and can work on moods in whatever order strikes your fancy.

To learn more, check out the community profile; to take a look at the projected schedule, check this sticky post.

Fandom Gift Basket, a multifandom fest. Text is overlaid over a slightly blurred photo of a gift basket.

Fandom Gift Basket ([community profile] fandomgiftbasket) is a multifandom fest where people sign up with information about what they want (fandoms, mediums, characters/relationships, prompts) and others give it to them. The goal is for everyone who signed up with at least three fandoms to receive at least two gifts in their basket! This hasn't been accomplished yet, so the revealing of the fest has been delayed until the baskets listed below have been filled. If any of the requests below look like something you could make, please consider doing so!

The current deadline is September 30th 11:59pm UTC with reveals next day at noon (if there's another delay, the time will be moved to next week). Check out this google spreadsheet for the current number of gifts per person and also a list of every request in this fest round. The minimums are 100 words for fic, 100x100 pixels for graphics or icons (unless specified otherwise), a small doodle for art, and equivalents for anything else. All gifts must be complete at the time of posting, in a requested fandom, with requested characters/relationships, in a requested medium, and avoid all DNWs. (Read the full rules here.)

#1 Banshee [art, fic, fanvid], Carnival Row [fic, meta], The Gifted [art, fic, fanvid], Snowdrop [fic, fanvid, art], Warrior (TV 2019) [fic]
#2 - Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi | Sunday Without God, Octopath Traveler II, Toji no Miko | Katana Maidens, Yoru no Nai Kuni | Nights of Azure [all: fic]
#3 - Twisted Wonderland, The Sandsea Trilogy, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Nier Reincarnation [all: art, fanmix, fanvid, fic, meta]
#4 - Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (novel or manhwa) [fic, art], Boku no Hero Academia (anime), Natsume Yuujinchou [both: art]

The above are what's needed for the fest to reveal, but people are more than welcome to post gifts for everyone else, too! If you'd like to participate and create something small (or big! :D) for someone, but don't know the fandoms listed here, feel free to browse the spreadsheet or the Masterlist post on the comm; we have a wide variety of fandoms present so you may find a request that interests you!

What It Is: [community profile] ficreadersadvisory Trope Scavenger Hunt Week 1: Fake Dating

How it Works: Look for fics that utilize the trope and give them a read, then return to the scavenger hunt post and comment with a link to the fic, a little bit about what it's about, and talk about what you thought of it - if you liked it, if you think the trope was well used within the fic, and anything else pertinent.
soc_puppet: A hissing tuxedo cat demands to know, "What did you just post?!" (Spitefic and Kittens)
    [personal profile] soc_puppet
Spite can be an excellent motivator, but there aren't a lot of natural situations where you can prompt it to promote your preferred content. Nor is feeding the trolls ever a good idea. And just what are you going to do with all of the adorable pictures of cats and other animals you've been saving over the years?

Enter [community profile] kittens_and_spitefic! The goal of this community is to prompt fan content by acting like a total troll and pretending to bash what you want to see up one side and down the other. Commenters then engage with the supposed "troll" by spamming them with cat (and other animal) macros and/or content that caters to everything the original poster professes to hate: Writing short (or long) fics in the comments, drawing the exact thing OP was ranting about, even sharing links to fic recs and meta/analysis posts. Roleplay getting one up on someone with bad opinions while creating more work for something you love, and discover new things you may be a fan of in the process!

Still not quite sure how it works? Check out this 18+ example post or this all ages example post!

Every month there will also be a prompt post open to the public, so people can get a better feel for the community before joining and to help show that it's still active. To celebrate the opening of the community, we're having two public posts to cover October and November! Check them out here: Hugging is overrated (SFW only) and No, they can't top (NSFW welcome), and make sure the OPs know exactly how wrong they are!

Out of the Auditary returns for another year! This is a fest for podficcing works that don't fit into the "standard" fiction format, such as meta, not!fic, epistolary and chatfic, video game codes entries, fake scientific articles, poetry, and many more! Rules and details are here on AO3; submission deadline is March 30th! If you'd like examples as to what was created for this fest in previous years, check out the parent collection.

In an effort to read more, I have been slowly collecting and subscribing to AO3 feeds on Dreamwidth.

To this effect, I asked for others to call out feeds they've made and subscribed to. I also went through the 1000 feeds listed through the Dreamwidth Feed page and pulled all the ones I could see were AO3-centric. (There are many feeds for various sites and blogs there, if you are looking for more variety!)

My collection is at this link and I would love for anyone who has a feed not in that list for AO3 to leave me a comment so I can update it.

(NB: I did grab all the AO3 feeds I could find, regardless of if I read in it. No bashing on the tastes of anyone that has created something there, please.)

ETA: check the comments for other feeds that might not be showing on the feeds page, that are not AO3 specific!

Glad to see more interest here in growing community again!

Another option for finding people and community recommendations is an an old school friending meme, or, as feels more appropriate for DW, a Dreamwidth Circle Meme for finding like-minded people (or intriguingly different-minded people) to subscribe to and get to know. I'm hosting another round at my journal here. Please feel welcome and encouraged to drop by and say hello.
