Does anyone else feel this way? Like the fanworks would get attention for unwanted/unintended reasons. Or involved a source material/pairing/topic you'd rather not promote, but you can't get rid of the bunny any other way than doing the fanwork. For me, the big ones are Rooster Teeth media, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, romantic pairings straight or gay (unfair attention either way), and plain old-fashioned cowardice. Thoughts?

You could always write it and never post it?

Post anonymously somewhere? Create a sock-puppet?

They sound like good ideas. I hope that they mean that like-minded people will find your work, and that you will be able to evade the trolls.

Coming back to this one after a fairly long time (I was rather busy with uni stuff when it was originally posted, so I'll use that as my excuse...).

I have a couple of stories on my hard drive which I have written, and which I seriously doubt I'll ever post publicly. Not because they're objectively "bad". But rather because as far as I'm concerned, they're actually invasive of the privacy of one of the characters, going into spaces my conception of the character would rather keep to themselves. So they sit there on my hard drive, and every so often I look at them, and go "should I?" and every single time so far the answer has been "nope, I don't want to do that to $CHARACTER_NAME".

I have written things that I opted not to post, knowing that readers would probably latch onto parts of it I would rather they not or would interpret things in a way I didn't intend. Sometimes you just got to write it for you so you know what fills that particular gap, and that's enough. It isn't cowardice. Personally, if I write something where the intent is that a certain behavior is unhealthy, and most readers respond to the behavior as if it is unhealthy, but a couple of readers respond with "aww, that's so sweet" it makes me feel really uncomfortable and like I'm responsible for furthering some unhealthy views.
