If you would still like to try amvs, vexercises is posting a series of vidding exercises aimed at people of all levels. They're up to the third one now, but there's no real deadlines, so you can join in whenever! The best part for me is that so far they're limited to one-minute shorts, so I can get practice without having to worry about finishing full things.

oooooh i'll definitely check that out!!! my computer probably can't handle video editing (well it can, but the last time i tried rendering everything froze so) but i might be getting a new one soon so i might give it a try.

and if I'm really lucky, they can point me at a free and preferably open-source video editor that won't crash my computer. million bonus points if I can figure out how to use it! (I miss Windows Movie Maker so bad)

Everyone seems to be recommending Da Vinci Resolve, which is free and really powerful, but I have no data on crashing - it's been fine on my laptop which is relatively low-power but newish.

I think I had this a laptop or two ago? it crashed it trying to export a video.

maybe it won't crash this one?

I also miss Windows Movie Maker :( I wish there were more editing software that were focused towards people who only want to do very simple things with them, most interfaces I've found make me immediately close the program.

If you're still looking for programs, I've had a little bit of luck with Wondershare Filmora for doing the really basic cut-video-into-bits-and-put-music-over-it type things, and have been pretty happy with HitFilm Express for doing slightly more complicated things. I have to look up tutorials for HitFilm every once and a while, but for the most part the things I want to do come pretty easy.

not gonna download HitFilm at this time because the emoji on the name-your-price slider sobs when I slide it down to zero and then they ask for my email address, and I might download it if they did only one of those two things, but since they are doing both, I shall not unless Wondershare Filmora turns out not to do something I want it to.
