Sorry if this has been asked recently and I've missed it! I was just wondering - does anyone else have things they don't watch/read/play precisely BECAUSE they'll love them and they don't have time for a whole new fandom right now? In my case, Persona 5, Killing Eve, The Untamed, Good Omens, and Nirvana on Fire are the big ones at the moment.

I'm sort of perpetually terrified of getting involved with a new narrative. It's why it can take me months or years to plunge into something even if i know I'll probabaly like it.

So many SFF books from tumblr rec lists, and does rewatching count? because I've only just noticed this week that FMA's first anime is up on Netflix and I was very much tempted to dive back in. It was my first big and longest lived fandom and I know I could very well redkindle my utter obession with it... but I have a few long fics for a different fandom I need to work on first, and if I go back to FMA now I'll just drop them and might never finish them?

Oh my god YES
The Untamed is one of mine right now too; all my friends are like 'watch it!' and I'm holding off because my fandom bandwith is so full about so many other things and can't dedicate more energy to New Thing.
I'll get there... eventually. Once I've worn myself out on some of the current hyperfixations.

(Can vouch for Persona 5 and Good Omens, but managed to enjoy them without all-consuming fandom obsession, somehow.)

I think for me P5 and Good Omens both hit the "reviving a previous fandom" space rather than starting something new, which helped. The TV series of Good Omens was nice, but I preferred the head-cast I had for the characters from back when I first read the story in the late 1990s, and I think a lot of the story was really about the whole mid-90's zeitgeist as much as anything else - very much about the death of the Cold War spy thriller as a genre. Persona 5 I enjoyed immensely (more than Persona 3, which was my entry into the series back when); Royal... less so (to the point where I'm probably going to have to push myself to eventually finish it - Royal suffers not so much from telegraphed punches as punches announced with three weeks advance notice and reservation notes).

Totally get that - it's way easier for me to get into a new part of existing fandom than starting completely fresh!
I didn't have a necessarily set head-cast when I read the book; it was quite malleable for me, especially as I saw other's fanart, so the TV series was just like 'ah another way they can look'!
P4 was my existing thing, and I really need to finish P3. I haven't yet played Royal, but I had a friend tell me they felt similar. A shame!

Gameplay-wise, Royal is an improvement on P5, and makes the game a bit more playable in a lot of ways. If I could get a mod for the original game which included some of the Royal mods to the gameplay (like the one which means you can do things after a session in Mementos or in a Palace, even if you can't leave the café) I'd be overjoyed. But story-wise, Royal falls down badly, because the original story of Persona 5 was fairly tightly plotted, and the end result is the new story components Royal introduces feel very "pasteded on, yay" and a bit on the artificial side.

I avoided Killing Eve for a long time for this reason, but ended up watching it and enjoying it but not being completely fannishly taken with it. I wrote one fic and will watch the next season whenever TV is a thing again.

I was just considering whether I should give The Untamed a try, ha.

Nirvana in Fire is definitely on that list for me, as is The Guardian. I'm currently watching The Untamed, and I definitely don't have the bandwidth for something as politically complicated as NiF until I get a bit farther away from the center of my preoccupation with MDZS.

No, nothing has hit my fandom sweet spot. I think I could have a fandom fling with What We Do In The Shadows.

Oh yeah. There are fandoms that I completely missed because I didn't have bandwidth for a new thing at the time. And a lot of time when I do get to things it's after the most intense fandom activity has slowed. It's too bad, if I had started Guardian when it was first recced to me I'd have been around the fandom when it was more active, and I'm sorry I missed that. But, there's a limit to the number of things I can be fannish about at a time.

Not per say; it's more that curbside library is slowing me down a bit.

I avoided The Witcher for ages for just this reason (recently caved)...

But Good Omens caught me decades ago.

Not that I can think of! I've put off watching/reading things because I didn't have the time for the initial commitment, of course, but can't think of any I delayed not because I anticipated having enough time for that but not for follow-up fannishness.

I have picked up comic series but put off reading them for this very reason (Monstress and DC Bombshells).

I've read the first volume and adore it (the art is gorgeous, the the worldbuilding is amazing), but wasn't grabbed by the I MUST MAKE FANWORKS IMMEDIATELY! urge.

I do this all the time! Right now, I've been avoiding The Old Guard for this reason. I also started and then stopped Killing Eve. Emotional investment in a new fandom requires a lot of energy! And I like finishing things before I start new things.

I've been in this space for a long time. First came ten years of unemployment, where I couldn't pick up new fandoms because I literally couldn't afford them. Then, I got a job (and was studying at the same time) and now I can afford new fandoms, but I don't have the necessary headspace to put them in or the spoons to process things.

Fandoms I'm currently avoiding: Leverage; The Witcher (got a few of the books, haven't finished the second); most of the SFF book ones out there; All of Ursula Vernon's Stuff (I know I'll love it, but I don't have the energy to chase it down at present); etc etc etc

I'm currently in a space where if something new wants my attention, it's going to have to sneak in through a backdoor by being part of something I'm already interested in (like P5 did - I was interested in the Persona series; I just wasn't expecting this one to eat my life). Otherwise, I just do not have the spoons.

Heeeee, I was recced Leverage by someone (don't remember who) but avoided watching it during the main part of the Yahoo Groups Fandom Rescue Project (because just no time, sadly) and after the time-sensitive stuff was done, I needed something to distract myself from all the mop-up work so I watched it, and now I am so glad I have dug into it because it is amazing. *makes encouraging noises towards putting that one next* I'm fortunate in that a couple of my friends either just discovered it or had never read any fic for it, really, so as I plow through all the fic (well, anything that isn't crossed over with a fandom I don't know, has a ship I really don't like, or is by a writer I've learned isn't one I want to read), they want all the recs sent their way. I'm actually trying to finish with a big mop-up task for the YG project just so I can write more Leverage fic, lol. (Of course, I would end up falling hard for a minority ship, at odds with most of the fandom, but such is my life, lol.) It is full of all the amazing found family feels, a character that is more-or-less canonically on the autism spectrum (and which easily comes across as ace), broken people who become less broken as they heal together… yeah, major love. I've gotten yet another friend into it and two of us are rewatching as she watches for the first time (in sync) and chatting on Discord about it as we go, which is so much fun (two eps in so far, so much goodness yet to go!).

I have certainly done this in the past! /*sings "I don't need another fandom" to the tune of "We Don't Need Another Hero"*/

I haven't done it lately (in fact I would kind of like to get sucked into a new fandom), probably because I have gotten cantankerous and curmudgeonly (I mean, more so than I already was) and nothing lately has had that intensity of temptation for me.

I warn people about my game fandoms before I rec them, because a lot of the games I love are the sort that you can play over and over, sinking hundreds of hours into. For myself, I know that if I start a season of something on Netflix (...with autoplay) on the weekend, there goes my Saturday. There's a 100% that I'll watch the whole thing through with maybe one break for lunch. If I want to get writing done on a Saturday, I can't start anything new.

I feel like this is me every since I graduated and got a proper job. I just don't have the time or brain energy to get involved in new fandoms, even if I think I might like them. I have The Untamed and Nirvana in Fire, also The Expanse and Mr. Robot on my to watch pile. Anime wise, I have Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Mob Psycho 100, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Gintama, a bunch of Gundam shows. I don't even have time to read long fanfics that I might like for my current fandom(s).
