Things to Look Forward To

This is the time of year for fandom goals posts, but honestly "Goals" seems too ambitous sometimes, so - what are you looking forward to, fandom-wise, right now? It could be finding a new fandom or getting new canon, or catching up or rewatching old canon, or that longfic you've been saving up to read, or a new chapter in a favorite wip, or an online con, or finishing something, or being able to stick with something you're enjoying right now, or re-organizing your merch collection, or whatever!

Right now I have a new-ish plot bunny for a long, complicated fic (a Southern Gothic/cold water SCUBA AU for Locked Tomb fandom, look it makes sense in my head and I've been watching too much youtube) and I am looking forward to spending a lot of time daydreaming it and probably never writing it at all. :)

Also maybe finally buying myself Minecraft, because I'm a grown-up and can do that.

Just sometime after getting into Bionicle a fangame that was on the making for 6 years was announced, looks really good so looking forward to it.

Minecraft is a fun game, hope you enjoy it! If you ever look for a texture pack after getting it I recommend Mizuno's 16 Craft, it's very pretty!

I recently discovered that there is an install of the old .edu version of Minecraft on all the work computers, so I've been playing at lunch! I'm just to the point of figuring out how to successfully get out of a boat, so texture packs are probably a bit in the future. :D It's super addictive though, so I'm afraid (hoping?) that if I do get it at home I won't ever stop playing to, like, eat - I had MinerVGA as a wee one and would play it for hours on end, and Minecraft is like that only moreso! (And my version of MinerVGA actually had a mechanic where you had to go visit the outhouse once in awhile, Minecraft doesn't even have that.)

Bionicle always seemed like a fun fandom - it's neat when something that's been talked about for years and years seems like it might finally arrive.

Thinking of tinkering into Harry Potter, potentially finishing a WIP I've spent years on but never finished and possibly writing a fic that explores Cho Chang, whose name I'm either going to change to Cora or Chloe. Basically a fix-it fic. I don't really write fic anymore, but recent stuff from JKR has made me want to re-examine the books. A lot. The WIP less so, I started it before any of the fallout happened, but certainly the idea of taking another look at Cho's character.

Harry Potter is so complicated rn, isn't it. That sounds like a good thing to work on though!

I have to say, I really love the idea of reframing Cho Chang - and giving her a different name. I always wanted her to have more of a role than she ultimately did. I hope you end up finishing it!

SCUBA AU??? That sounds like exactly the kind of thing I would like to read for that fandom (I really like those books but... the setting is actually not my favourite? I'm not much of a visualizer when I read, so all of the descriptions of bone stuff and weird spaceships and such are kind of lost on me.)

Most of the Scuba AUs on AO3 are tropical coral reef diving (and not many of those) but I've been on a kick since summer of the kind of people who do North Atlantic wreck dives, or the Great Lakes, or muddy rivers with zero visibility, or cave divers.

Specifically, I recently discovered a rabbit hole on YouTube of people who dive creepy rivers and lakes in the rural US looking for the remains of missing persons, and they're always going to these rundown dying towns where the average age is 65 and the cops are corrupt, and I was like, yes, all the HtN characters clearly live in a backwater in the Carolinas and spend their spare time diving in a river full of the remains of missing persons that were rumored to have been dumped there by the county sheriff's people.

So there would still be weird dead bodies!

Since most of my fandoms probably won't have much/any new canon this year for various reasons, I'm looking forward to having time to try some new shows and maybe catch up on some that I never finished. The Expanse is currently at the top of my "heard good things" list.

I picked up (video game) Crying Suns for free because it was recced as being similar to FTL, which I love, so I'm looking forward to whenever I decide I have enough downtime to give that a try!

After half-assing Twin Peaks fandom for a few months, I guess I really am going to have to watch most of the original, Fire Walk With Me, and all of The Return in order to to complete the post-canon crossover with The Hidden (1987) that I started last week...

I am looking forward to the trio of MCU TV shows we'll be getting starting next week. I won't be watching until April but I was hoping to see them this past fall so I am more than ready!

I'm looking forward to the MCU content that will (hopefully) drop this year. The Black Widow movie, Falcon and Winter Soldier series, the Loki series... <3 WandaVision too, but I'll wait to pick up Disney+ when Falcon and Winter Soldier comes out.

We keep talking about trying Disney+ but we always say "Well, we'll wait until one more show comes out".

Minecraft is so much fun. I find it very relaxing to go mining. :D

It's an excellent way to leave the real world entirely for awhile!

The version I have been playing is one where you still need to walk around and explore and mine to gather supplies and stuff, but you don't need to eat and nothing can hurt you except gravity, water and lava. I like that version. :D

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition comes out in either April or June and I'm so excited for it to re-awaken my love of the original trilogy.

I'm also excited for Black Mass, Mike Flanagan's next series. Is it possible that a showrunner can be a fandom unto himself? Because I've definitely been following his body of work since Oculus, and the cast of Black Mass looks amazing. Plus, religious horror! One of the best kinds of horror!

A showrunner can definitely be a fandom! (see: classic Jossverse). I hope the new one is good! And the new Mass Effect too - that's a game with a loyal fandom.

I have something on the "new chapter in a favorite wip" front, which is unusual for me because I usually avoid wips and only start reading them once they've been completed. But I read a really excellent Star Wars longfic called Like Fire in Our Bones, and the author was a few chapters into the sequel, so I thought, I'll just read those chapters to find out what happened next, and now I'm hanging out for each new chapter as it appears.

I'm hoping (once this current RSI flare-up dies down and I'm back to full function) to be able to finish playing Persona 5 Royal, and also to get through Final Fantasy VII: Remake part 1. I have plans to get Persona 5 Strikers / Scramble when that comes out (must get around to doing that pre-order). Once I'm able to type and write reliably, I may be able to get back to working on my many and varied WsIP, depending on how much capacity for anything work and uni leave me at the end of the week.

Beyond that, I intend to stick with my current pursuits of watching the current fandom convulsions from the sidelines, and trying to stay out of ground zero for the worst of it.

Watching from the sidelines is generally the best choice for fandom drama, yeah.

I've discovered the world of fandom exchanges last year and I need to learn how not to throw myself at every exchange and get totally overwhelmed this year.

I also fell hard into the Hades fandom, so I guess I'll be having some more creations for that.

And hopefully, I'll find time and inspiration to go back to the WIP I started before discovering all those shiny new things.

Yes! Chiwetel Ejiofor! I am so impressed that an entire heist movie got written, funded and made since the first lockdown, too.

I am rewriting War of the Spark because pretty much all Magic players hated the book associated with that-- so I'm doing my own version that follows the general sequence of events but contains actual character development and people making choices that make sense and giving more interesting death scenes to the beloved major characters. I hope to actually *write* it in the coming year, as opposed to the very detailed outline with some written scenes that I currently have... (Very much looking forward to doing Gideon arc with proper buildup, and giving Dack more of an arc. And self-indulgent Mowu scenes.)

I have three fandom related goals for 2021, with a bonus that will depend on finances and time.

1. read enough things published in 2020 to have something to nominate in each category of the Hugo awards that I normally vote in
2. get through some of the 'marked for later' stories on the AO3
3. make some recs posts of the fic that I have bookmarked on the AO3

bonus: vote in at least my usual set of categories for the Hugos

Oh right, I remember back when I was actively wondering whether I should buy a membership to this year's worldcon (local to me!) in time to nominate! What a long time ago that seems like now. (Have they decided yet if they're postponing/going online?)

I'm planning on writing my Chocolate Box assignment. And if I have time, reading some more Leverage fic, because I never finished going through all of it before we packed to move right around Christmas and my life's still unpacking, unpacking, unpacking…

And at some point, I want to get back to my fanfic database. Organizing my fic collection like that was a blast and I really enjoyed re-reading fics for it, and being able to generate recs lists easily.
