Hey lovely folks! This is a genuine "asking for a friend" research question. Said friend posted about this tweet. Our responses were both "damn, good for them" but also neither of us understand the appeal of Reylo. Obviously there is and people are into it, and absolutely no judgment or squee-harshing at all—this is absolute curiosity.

I'm not in SW fandom at all, though I've seen most of the movies, and am only aware that there is some fandom drama around the issue. So if you ship it or a ship with similar dynamics and feel comfortable talking about it—what's the appeal? What about it does it for you?

Oh, I was fine with Reylo initially, because you can get some really good stories out of enemies-to-lovers and villain-redemption-arcs, and there was a lot of potential for that. I liked Finnrey and Rey/Finn/Poe more, but I'm polyfannish and polyshipper--I don't have an OTP and never will. Problem was, for every Reylo fic where Kylo was actually a villain with a redemption arc and/or a good enemies-to-lovers arc for Kylo and Rey, you'd have five or ten where Kylo was the true hero and had never done anything wrong. Combine that with Reylos harassing Finn fans and shitting all over Finn to do it, and I quickly stopped reading Reylo.

Disney couldn't do anything decent with a trilogy, because it would require them to have coherent long-term story plotting and characterization plotting, which they haven't been able to do with either Star Wars or Marvel stuff.

I liked Finnrey back in the day. I’m more of an OTP kind of shipper depending on the fandom. I usually do not multiship romantically.

Yeaaah honestly Disney messed up by rejecting Lucas’s original sequel treatments, getting rid of the EU, and not getting Favreau or other competent directors and writers who care about Star Wars to plan out the sequel trilogy.
