Icons?

So, I’m familiar with the purpose of icons, and the fact that you can have more than one. My question: where are some good places to find icons? And if one were to post icons (whether to their personal journal or a community), what are some norms/expectations/etc? (For a bit of additional context, I’m looking for some icons for Amphibia and a few comics (web, book, and strip) to use on here, and I’d also like to post some icons that I made prior to joining here)

I'd check out [community profile] icons to start and their tag list. Most communities have templates or general guidelines for posting (e.g. "no more than three icons above the cut.) so reading pinned posts or profile pages will get you that information. (Or just see how others posting do it.)

For finding icons, there are several active multifandom communities that ought to be useful:

[community profile] icons: This is the most general community. Everything's on topic. However, it also ran into the tag limit a bit ago, so it can be a bit tougher to find icons for recent fandoms—for example, when Amphibia came out the tag limit was already full, so [community profile] icons has no Amphibia tag. (It does have medium tags, though!)

[community profile] fandom_icons: Limited to fandom (i.e. no stock icons or nonfannish art icons). Has an Amphibia tag, though there's only one post in it so far.

[community profile] dwrp_icons: This comm's structured to make it easier for the DWRP people to find suitable icons, so its posting rules are a bit different from the other icon comms. It's good for finding large batches of icons of specific characters. No Amphibia tag, some comic tags.

[community profile] iconic seems pretty active, but it doesn't use fandom tagging so it's a bit harder to find things.

[community profile] comicbook_icons is less active than the biggest coms, but seems relevant to your interests! It includes icons for comic books and webcomics (the tag for the latter is "online comics").

[community profile] icontalking has a list of active icon communities here—that includes challenges as well as posting/linking comms.

For posting:

People generally post icons to their journals, then make a secondary post on one or more icon comms, with a few icons as a teaser + a link to the post proper. Individual comms will have different rules for the link posts. In some of them, only mods can create tags, so if you want tags that don't exist you'll have to ask a mod to create them for you. (I think some comms do allow posting icons directly to the comm but under a cut; however, I don't think I've ever seen anyone do this.)

For the record, icon posts are welcome here, just like any other kind of fandom-related content, and we have no particular guidelines or anything for them other then just the general idea of attempt to be considerate. :D You might get better uptake at an icon-themed comm though admittedly.

I'm really curious about current norms/expectations for icons too! Most of my mutuals (and me) it seems like have just been using a single default icon for everything the past ten years, so my concept of actual icon culture is probably very very out of date.

Can we add a tag for:
Type: question
And icons?

I knew somebody had asked basically the same question (here) and wanted to find it via a tag, but unfortunately there wasn‘t one yet.

[community profile] dreamsheep is a fun one if you want Dreamwidth-themed icons! There haven't been a whole lot of posts there recently, but I've had a whole lot of fun making them in the past, and will probably make more in the future.

the icons tag at [community profile] fan_flashworks will have lots

the other places i know of were already mentioned.

for posting, small batches of icons - doing the code yourself is fairly simple if you already have something set up. for larger batches, like my post here (154 icons) - i'll use a table generator like this one: https://chlorophylls.github.io/Dreamwidth-Icon-Table-Generator/ - b/c i know it works and i don't have to worry to much about borking the code.

Everybody seems to have the basics covered in the comments already, so I'll just link a small rec list of some lovely icon makers on dw.

This post at [personal profile] starterpack also goes into the norms around uploading icons :)
