The Truth is Outside
A very close pair of ghost-hunting brothers are tragically divided; then one of them falls for the grumpy, poorly-socialized man from above the clouds who tries to rescue him from Hell.
This is a collection of source documents preserving the history of some people who tried to protect the world from some dangerous artifacts and entities. Beware the Eye.
Gotta catch them all.
This started as an unconventional webcomic and grew a massive and controversial fandom in the early 2010s. So many cosplay photos.
Deft characterization and nostalgic settings built a large and vibrant fandom community.
Dedicated to intense training from a young age, they must learn to work as a team despite coming from very different nations and backgrounds.
A group of queer emo kids sing their way to freedom, possibly also the afterlife.

Date: 2022-07-15 03:52 pm (UTC)The descriptions are amazing. Two favorites:

Date: 2022-07-15 04:22 pm (UTC)1. X-Files is one of the great fandoms of all time and I know literally nothing about Dangan Ronpa -
2. MDSZ is an amazing canon that has produced an amazing fandom full of wonderful things, and introduced a generation of fans to a whole new continent's worth of fantasy fandoms. Supernatural is... Supernatural.
3. I haven been a LotR fandom since at least middle school and there's so much to love ... but post-Hobbit Movies it's starting to feel a bit like butter over too much bread. Also at one point a bunch of my friends decided Turin Turambar was their poor little meow meow and it was rude to say to it to them, so: fuck Turin Turambar, he's an ass who deserved everything he got and didn't learn from any of it.
4. I have extremely mixed feelings about the whole concept of criminal profilers. I have no mixed feelings about Pikachu.
5. One of these fandoms had considerably more Nazis, iirc.
6. I know very little about either of these! But all of the "let's cynically profit off Geek Pride" in the Stranger Things merch blitz really annoyed me.
7. I have some good memories involving hockey fandom, but She-Ra has N. D. Stevenson, so.
8. THIS ONE IS SO HARD BUT I CAN'T NOT PICK LES MIS. (At least Les Mis has never terrorized me with twelve-year-olds telling me about these classic bands they're getting into you know the ones that their parents liked when they were teenagers.)

Date: 2022-07-15 05:00 pm (UTC)I'm not that familiar with Pokemon, but I thought the whole premise was to capture creatures and force them to fight each other? That seems also horrible, like dog or cock fighting basically, just with fantasy animals. I picked the copaganda...

Date: 2022-07-15 05:18 pm (UTC)(Honestly, the world building is sketchy at best. But none of that is Pikachu's fault!)
(My issues with profilers go beyond just copaganda, it's become increasingly clear that profiling itself was alway mostly pseudoscience with good propaganda, which would be a problem even if they were all p.i.s.)

Date: 2022-07-15 05:56 pm (UTC)But I don't recall any media coverage of police highlighting any use just various pop psychology stuff in the press after. The most recent serial killer case I remember was a guy who worked as nurse killing a hundred old people over years and nobody noticed for ages, and not because the murderer was some criminal mastermind -- the procedures were just really that failing... and that wasn't the first medical mass murderer here either. Meanwhile the occasional cases where some guy murders several more or less random people in particular if it's sex workers tend to be solved by accident here? Like the murderer left his camera with photos of earlier victims but also of his own car, or happened to murder somebody on surveillance camera or body parts are accidentally discovered in or very near somebody's home, nothing that makes for a heroic investigation narrative of any kind.

Date: 2022-07-15 06:18 pm (UTC)I haven't heard that much about it lately - I think because even the FBI has started to sheepishly admit that in RL criminal cases it doesn't do much that a bit of basic stats can't do - but the reason there's so many nearly-magic-level profilers in US media is that the real ones put so much effort into building their own myth, and for all I appreciate Fox Mulder and Will Graham in all their angsty aspec empath glory, I wish it would stop.

Date: 2022-07-15 07:23 pm (UTC)Probably because of history, authorities talking about types of criminals that they can predict by examining people, psychologically or otherwise, has somewhat less heroic potential as German pop culture trope. Like the guy who got famous via the Fritz Haarmann murders in the Weimar Republic and inspired pop culture like Fritz Lang's M and a lot of stuff after (and still), then worked under the Nazis.
Though from what I understand he wasn't really a sympathizer (and died in 1939), so not the most problematic kind of official, but that isn't saying much if you just more or less smoothly continue your career and arrange yourself with whatever, though actually the founding civil servants who organized the modern German Federal police were almost all SS members a few years earlier (well, about 2/3 by the late 1950s, and even by the late 1960s over half of the leadership positions in the federal police were still filled with former Nazis), so you don't really get fully sympathetic people, and probably the Weimar guy who at least wasn't actively a Nazi but just stayed in his job is a good as it gets for that era.
Anyway, I actually can't think of any other famous police detectives that inspired pop culture here, though I think there were a couple semi-famous of German language forensic psychiatrists who also made money with True Crime adjacent stuff in the 1990s in that serial killer popularity phase.

Date: 2022-07-15 05:36 pm (UTC)And that’s the reason why this matchup was the easiest.
(I remember hearing about pro-Imperial Japan stuff in the source material as well? But I don’t have any evidence beyond some Tumblr posts mentioning it).
(Also: this time I picked the most popular of the matchups for EACH AND EVERY ONE. I wonder how long I can keep this streak going…)

Date: 2022-07-15 06:33 pm (UTC)I'm not super knowledgeable on Hetalia, tbh, but the main characters are the WWII Axis powers, so... But a lot of Japanese media has some element of wrestling with the legacy of WWII and the Empire, as you'd expect, which is immensely complicated and I'm not going to judge. (I am totally willing to judge how American fans choose to engage with it, though!)

Date: 2022-07-15 08:05 pm (UTC)Fire Emblem vs Stranger Things is the first one where I'm not voting because I have no acquaintance with or feelings about either one. One's a game where you lead armies and the other's a TV show where people fight monsters and play d&d? I guess? That's the limit of my knowledge.
The descriptions continue to be great. TMA vs LOTR is inspired.
