OH NO my first question to truly struggle with! bandom vs les mis!! I had to go with les mis in the end but bandom was so important to me at a specific stage in my life and it's a tragedy to not be able to vote for it at least once

TMA vs LotR, what a cruel choice! One is one of my favorite fandoms of recent years, something that introduced me to a new genre and medium, that I wrote fic for and listened to together with friends and still have so many feelings about; and the other is such a nostalgia fandom that I still appreciate a lot. Hmmm.

The descriptions are amazing. Two favorites:

I have extremely mixed feelings about the whole concept of criminal profilers. I have no mixed feelings about Pikachu.

I'm not that familiar with Pokemon, but I thought the whole premise was to capture creatures and force them to fight each other? That seems also horrible, like dog or cock fighting basically, just with fantasy animals. I picked the copaganda...

TBH I never really thought about criminal profiling in a RL context, just as a genre trope in serial killer fiction, though I'm sure various dubious "psychology" believes negatively influence police here as well.

But I don't recall any media coverage of police highlighting any use just various pop psychology stuff in the press after. The most recent serial killer case I remember was a guy who worked as nurse killing a hundred old people over years and nobody noticed for ages, and not because the murderer was some criminal mastermind -- the procedures were just really that failing... and that wasn't the first medical mass murderer here either. Meanwhile the occasional cases where some guy murders several more or less random people in particular if it's sex workers tend to be solved by accident here? Like the murderer left his camera with photos of earlier victims but also of his own car, or happened to murder somebody on surveillance camera or body parts are accidentally discovered in or very near somebody's home, nothing that makes for a heroic investigation narrative of any kind.

I think the job as such exists here as well in actual policing. I haven't read (or watched) any histories (I'm generally not much into the True Crime genre). I have always assumed that it evolved out of the earlier phrenology stuff that wanted to spot and sort criminals by the length of their foreheads or such, and probably always had about as many problems, just in a newer, spiffier package that resonates with the respective contemporaries.

Probably because of history, authorities talking about types of criminals that they can predict by examining people, psychologically or otherwise, has somewhat less heroic potential as German pop culture trope. Like the guy who got famous via the Fritz Haarmann murders in the Weimar Republic and inspired pop culture like Fritz Lang's M and a lot of stuff after (and still), then worked under the Nazis.

Though from what I understand he wasn't really a sympathizer (and died in 1939), so not the most problematic kind of official, but that isn't saying much if you just more or less smoothly continue your career and arrange yourself with whatever, though actually the founding civil servants who organized the modern German Federal police were almost all SS members a few years earlier (well, about 2/3 by the late 1950s, and even by the late 1960s over half of the leadership positions in the federal police were still filled with former Nazis), so you don't really get fully sympathetic people, and probably the Weimar guy who at least wasn't actively a Nazi but just stayed in his job is a good as it gets for that era.

Anyway, I actually can't think of any other famous police detectives that inspired pop culture here, though I think there were a couple semi-famous of German language forensic psychiatrists who also made money with True Crime adjacent stuff in the 1990s in that serial killer popularity phase.

I had such a powerful 'how dare you' reaction to this even though you're absolutely right. On paper, yes, you are forcing creatures to fight each other. But somehow it's okay. It's very important to believe that when you're watching or playing Pokémon.

No, you don't force your pokemon to fight. The worldbuilding explicitly says that they enjoy fighting and do it in the wild anyway.

Also a lot of tough ones for me but especially TMA vs LOTOR - while I’m more familiar with the TMA fandom, I ultimately picked LOTOR because while it might not have had a lot of influence on fandom (that I know of), it was very important/influential in its genre, and TMA is too young/recent for me and people in general to really get a sense of what its long-term impact on anything would be
One of these fandoms had considerably more Nazis, iirc.

And that’s the reason why this matchup was the easiest.
(I remember hearing about pro-Imperial Japan stuff in the source material as well? But I don’t have any evidence beyond some Tumblr posts mentioning it).
(Also: this time I picked the most popular of the matchups for EACH AND EVERY ONE. I wonder how long I can keep this streak going…)

Noooo, don't let SPN beat MDZS... argh, I should have guessed that this would start getting painful when it hit my actual current fandoms. I think MDZS/Untamed is vastly superior to SPN on every possible count, both canon and fandom, but SPN is one of the ongoing juggernauts, so. IDK how that will go.

Fire Emblem vs Stranger Things is the first one where I'm not voting because I have no acquaintance with or feelings about either one. One's a game where you lead armies and the other's a TV show where people fight monsters and play d&d? I guess? That's the limit of my knowledge.

The descriptions continue to be great. TMA vs LOTR is inspired.
